Motto (Berwyn, PA)

Friends, I am still catching up here. I think we are finally through all the summer finds, adventures and recipes! But I still have more to share! Up next a sushi/ramen spot that I wanted to share has a happy hour – but after going a second time, they no longer offer it. But Motto is still worth a visit!

Ambiance/Atmosphere: This corner spot is neighbors to same of my faves including Tio Mexicana, Frankie Felini’s and La Cabra. They have a simple, modern décor vibe on the inside. They make the food the art and focal point of each visit. The staff are super friendly, welcoming and patient.  They have two areas of seating with plenty of tables. It was a quiet later afternoon/early evening and made for a wonderful and intimate and quiet dinner!

Drinks: They have a variety of drinks including Japanese sodas and specialty drinks I decided to try the pink lady. I was a refreshing drink but sweet. Not sure I would order it again with sushi as it wasn’t the best pairing. But it was delicious so I would venture to taste something else, depending on the food I was ordering. Second time around, opted to just have water and make the food the highlight.

Menu: The menu is full of options and it will all depend what you are in the mood for as well. I was all prepared to highlight the happy hour menu, but like I said, it doesn’t appear that they still have happy hour. So let me just highlight the food – because it is all worth it! Let’s start with appetizers- the pepper tuna is delicious. It is light and refreshing. It is seared to perfection with a peppery coating. It eats smoothly like butter. Next up: rolls. The salmon roll and spicy tuna roll are classics, but still delicious (on happy hour they were only $5; don’t know how you resist them LOL). They have delicious specialty rolls as well. The green dragon has eel, avocado and cucumber. It is my favorite cooked roll to order. I don’t know what it is about eel, but I find it to be perfectly cooked and delicious is roll form. 10/10! Also tried the Godzilla roll (deep-fried; cheese, avocado, crab stick, white fish, with scallion, nori and spicy mayo and eel sauce). This is a great one as it is crunchy yet still gives you the roll vibe.

The bacon bomb was the last one that was tried. It had shrimp tempura and bacon. It wasn’t my favorite, but I loved the combinations of flavor. I just wish the bacon was crispier. My favorite was ordering the sushi a la carte. I have tasted a few and listed them in order of my favorites. I would however, order them all again lol. Salmon Belly, eel, Bluefin tuna Toro, blue fin tuna and yellowtail. I think next time I want to try the white tuna a scallop! I like that you can order them sushi (with rice) or sashimi (just the fish). Last item that was tried on the menu was the steak fried rice. It was a nice large plate that can be share, plus left overs! The flavor was delicious and gave a great authentic Asian spice. Next time, ramen will be tried and the menu and options sound so delicious and perfect for the colder weather months! Click here to see the menu.

Tips/Recommendations: As always, try it first! If you’re in a rush, they offer take out, even larger sizes for parties! I recommend at the tuna appetizer; it was a delicious and light starter. I also recommend that sushi a la carte. The salmon belly, eel and tuna Toro were my favorite but they offer such a great variety that you can have find with your choices! And as always, try something new every time you go!
