Portabello’s (Kennett Square, PA)

I love mushrooms! They have always been my favorite (especially pizza topping). I like all kinds and in any way! So, when you get a gift card to try a place in Kennett Square (the mushroom capital) called Portabello’s … you prepare to go for the all out mushrooms!

Ambiance/Atmosphere: It was the most perfect night. Not only did we get inside just before the storm came through, but we got prime street parking right out front. They have the perfect set up with outdoor seating, big front windows that open to make it feel like Parisian café style. The bar is big with plenty of seating. Then in the back is more of the finer dinning room. They had live music which was the perfect restaurant style dinning music. It was light piano and trumpet playing with some singing as well. It made for the perfect dinner setting! Staff were very friendly and welcoming as well.

Drinks: They have a full bar of wine, beer, and cocktails. Blood orange margarita was the selection. It was fresh, tart and strong. I only needed two as they were plenty strong LOL. I would recommend to any margarita lover like myself!

Menu: The menu is not large, but they have a great selection. I looked at it ahead of time and had my options narrowed down lol. Started off with some fresh bread served with a mushroom gorgonzola hummus. It was very earthy, but I feel like a butter would have been better than the hummus. You just need to make sure you didn’t spread too much on at a time LOL. For appetizers, we ordered the stuffed mushrooms, portabello egg rolls and mushroom soup. The stuffed mushrooms were okay. Not amazing and I don’t think I would order them again. However, they had artichokes in the cheese mixture that I think were a great fun addition and helped to balance the cheese from being too cheesy. I would give them a 6/10. The egg rolls… I dream about them. They were the most delicious bite. Crispy and packed full of mushrooms with some cheese. They were one of my favorite egg rolls I have ever ordered. I would get these every time I go and they get a 10/10! The soup was also good. It was a very earthy soup with a hint of creamy. They made mushrooms the star, so it was not overly creamy or buttery. But still very delicious. I would definitely order it again and I give it an 8.5/10.

For the entrée I was between the risotto and the stroganoff. They had a steak special that sound really go too. But I did lean towards stroganoff as it is one of my favorites plus the risotto didn’t have a protein. The waitress recommend the stroganoff and she was right it was amazing. The short rib was so tender and flavorful. It paired very well with the mushrooms.  They laid on top of homemade potato gnocchi’s topped with a truffle sour cream drizzle. I do think they could have been more mushrooms, but that’s because I love them LOL. I do also think there could have been more sour cream as well. Overall, it was a very delicious dish that I would order again and I would give it a 9/10. However, I am dying to try the risotto and it is on my list to try next. I did have a taste of the whipped potatoes served with the steak and they were such a creamy buttery bite, it was probably the best whipped potato I have every tasted. So, I do need to keep that in mind when looking at their menu LOL. Lastly, had to end with dessert. What better way than with their chocolate dream cake. It was so decadent, but not overly sweet. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal! Click here to see the full menu.

Tips/Recommendations: First, it is a must try place. They do take reservations if you call. It is not required but recommended on the high traffic nights. The egg rolls are a must order. If you like earthy mushrooms also try the soup. I do think, however, you cannot go wrong with anything you order. And as always, try something new every time you go!
