PA Renn Faire

It’s time to highlight one of my favorite activities/adventures. I was shocked I hadn’t highlighted it yet – but turns out I haven’t been back since starting the blog, until now! Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire should be your next activity! I have recently attended the Celtic Fling. Which in my opinion, is the best weekend to go. But let me review it all as this past year was so HOT that I didn’t do and eat everything I normally do LOL.

Atmosphere/Activities/Shows: Celtic Fling weekend is as you expect. Irish, Scottish and the Celtic vibe with lots of drinks and music! There are highland games to watch and a variety of Celtic music performances that never disappoint. The regular faire has themed weekend events, shows/skits, music and more! They do spooky Halloween themes and even have a yuletide during the holiday season!  I think there is something for the whole family. I have been going since a kid. They even have carnival type games and rides etc. But I may have more fun as an adult appreciating the food, drinks and even understanding more of the skits haha. You also can’t forget the other vendors – shopping! A variety of places selling anything from jewelry to traditional clothing, to armor and weaponry. After attending several times, I think that Celtic Flings brings in the most vendors. This past year was probably the most I have seen in a long time. I love looking at the clothing, jewelry, or even the décor you can find. It is a great variety for all.

Drinks: They used to have free wine samplings inside the faire, but they are now at the winery/gift shop outside the gates. And I am not sure if it’s still free Lol. But there is a variety of drinks to choose from inside the faire. There is beer, wine, canned cocktails, sangria, mocktails, lemonade and more.  Multiple stands around the faire have a variety of options. A few of the stands also over the frozen variety drinks. This would be another great refreshing option (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic). My go-to usually is the sangria. I feel like it’s the perfect summer cool drink to enjoy. This time around, I opted for their canned cocktails, specifically the bees knees! With the heat index well over 100, something light and refreshing was needed. It was gin based with lemon and honey. Essentially a spiked lemonade LOL.

Food: Faire food – who doesn’t love it! LOL I also love the traditional renaissance food available, including the smoke turkey leg. Since a kid, a smoked turkey leg was always the food item to get. This time around, I feel like it was the perfect food to fuel up for the heat! I don’t think they are amazing, but they are a great option. My other favorite item to order is the pickle on the stick. I love to get the dill garlic pickle and it became the perfect treat on a blazing summer day. Other options include Scottish eggs, haggis, pierogies, burgers and more! They also have Italian ice, ice cream, soft serve, and dole whip type desserts. But my favorite sweet treat to end the day with is kettle corn! Make sure you don’t leave without getting a bag of freshly made kettle corn!

Tips/Recommendations: First, you need to go at least once! If it turns out it’s not for you – then oh well. But I do feel like there is something for everyone. I think Celtic Fling weekend is the best weekend to try as it has the most music performances and vendors! But if you see a themed weekend that speaks to you – go for that as well! Turkey legs and pickle on a stick on the must get food items! I would say the highland games or live chess match as the must-see items as well. I think it is easiest to buy tickets prior online and you can get an e-ticket right to your phone. Make sure you have cash as most of the food and drink vendors are cash only. There are atms on site, but better to be prepared! If you want to go multiple times, check out their season subscription options! And as always, try something new every time you go!
